Nicole R - Online Math Tutor

I am an alumnus of many educational institutions. I hold a BA in art education and a minor in psychology from California State Monterey Bay, a teaching credential from the University of Redlands, and am in the final stages of completing a master’s in elementary education. I was an educator with the Monterey Bay and San Francisco school districts for 8 years while obtaining my BA. While teaching art for the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, I taught students how to use fine art skills to effectively express themselves through personal reflection and creativity resulting in a middle and high school art show held at the Monterey Museum of Art. Preparing and executing engaging lessons for students at the after-school program in San Francisco aided in building my classroom management and teaching styles. These experiences built a foundation of teaching pedagogies and practices that contributed to my success as an educator. While pursuing my teaching credential at Redlands University, I taught preschool and worked as an aide in a 1st-grade classroom. During the credential program, I was able to integrate knowledge and pedagogies into the classroom. This experience allowed me to revise and refine the craft of teaching before receiving my credential. During my 10 years of teaching at a Los Angeles charter school, I decided to further my education and pursue a master's degree with an emphasis on elementary education. The master’s program in conjunction with the professional development seminars I attended while teaching gave me access to the most modern and researched based teaching strategies that are now being incorporated into classrooms across the nation. Some strategies include self-directed and self-guided learning, universal design lesson planning, discovery-based learning, cognitive guided instructional math, social-emotional based lessons, and many more. Considering all students learn differently and at different paces, I utilize these strategies daily to help determine the best teaching strategies to use for my students. With over 20 years of experience, I am confident in my teaching abilities to all students regardless of background. After years of training, education, and experience working with countless curriculums, I am confident that I can prepare a unique educational plan for your student that will promote success. My primary pedagogy is not a traditional lecture method, but rather focuses on the whole child approach which meets the needs of students but extends beyond academics. While teaching, I build a rapport with the student and focus on cultivating social-emotional learning and reflection, building confidence through tailor-made educational learning plans that promote success, navigating and learning through setbacks, and provide students with the tools of real-life critical thinking skills that will prepare them for their future education and throughout life.

Tutor with Happy Learning 2021-current Happy Learning is an online tutoring company that provides students around the world with teacher lead elective and tutoring courses. Currently, I teach beginning Spanish, geometry, speech, debate, and English. This position has allowed me to build structured lessons that provide students with content appropriate for their learning level, pace, and style. This boosts students' confidence and ability to feel competent and able to complete given assignments. Tutor with A+ Tutoring 2020-current With A+ Tutoring, I work closely with the parents, teachers, and other educational stakeholders to provide the student with the necessary tools for success. This can be anything from test-taking skills to executive functioning skills such as planning, time management, and task completion. I have supported students from pre-k to 8th grade. Some of the areas of support include teaching and reinforcing California State Common Core Curriculum, Eureka Math, SBAC state testing prep, kindergarten readiness programs, and much more. Independent Contractor Tutor for Families 2012-current While teaching at Isana I spent my free time tutoring students throughout the Los Angeles area. There are some families that I have worked with for 10 years tutoring all the children in the family. I can proudly say the students I have tutored in the past are now in AP and honors courses and have a 4.0 GPA. Independently tutoring for families gives me the opportunity to work with the parents, teachers, and other educational stakeholders to develop a unique educational plan for the student. In addition to an educational plan, I always maintain records, notes, and email/phone communication with all stakeholders. These records are available to all appropriate stakeholders to ensure everyone is aware of the student's goals and progress throughout the year. Isana Academies 2012-2022 For 10 years I taught elementary school at Isana Academies. Throughout my time there, I had extensive training in many different pedagogies of learning. These include self-directed learning, utilizing technology to conduct research, project-based learning, incorporating a flipped classroom that emphasizes discovery-based learning and cognitively guided instructional math are only some of the teaching strategies I have used and am familiar with.
