Every isosceles right triangle (45,45,90) has a square root of two hidden in it due to the Pythagorean Theorem. The hypotenuse is always the square root of two times the length of the equal sides. So if you have the measure of the sides and need to find the hypotenuse, multiply by the square root of 2. If you have the hypotenuse and need the sides, divide by the square root of two.
This is also very handy in the relationship of the sides of a square and its diagonals.
