This trip is 4 2/3 hours (presumably all driving on the highway).
3 1/8 = 25/8 gals per hour
4 2/3 hours = 14/3 hours
We want to know gals per trip
gals per trip = (gals per hour) * (hours per trip)
25/8*14/3=
350/24=14.5833333333...
That's a little ugly, but it has to be a rational number, since it's 350/24, which is a rational number.
We know 24 goes into 350 more than 14 but less than 15 times. So our number is 14 r/24. We can do long division here, or just:
14*24=336
350-336=14 -- this is r, the remainer
so we have:
14 14/24 gals=
14 7/12 gals
