4 5/7 + 7/8= ???
First step, turn the mixed number into an improper fraction:
4 5/7 =
4*(7/7)+5/7=
28/7+5/7=
33/7
Now we have
33/7+7/8
You can skip LCM if you want (7 and 8 are coprime, as are any two consecutive integers) and just multiply 7x8 to get 56. That's your common denominator.
33/7+7/8=
33(8)/56+7(7)/56
This is a simplification of
(33/7)*(56/56)+(7/8)(56/56)=
(33/7)*(7*8/56)+(7/8)(7*8/56)=
(33*8/56)(7/7)+(7*7/56)(8/8)=
(33*8/56)(1)+(7*7/56)(1)=
33(8)/56+7(7)/56
33*8=8*33=8(33)=
8(30+3)=
8(3)(10+1)=
24(10+1)=
240+24=
264
and 7*7=49
so 33(8)/56+7(7)/56=
264/56 + 49/56=
313/56 ~=5.589 which is the same as the original problem (4 5/7 + 7/8) put into a calculator.
