The most important thing to remember with these sort of problems is to isolate the 'x'.
In this problem you should start out by adding together the numbers that do not have a variable.
1) 30 + 4x + 70 = 180 ? 100 + 4x = 180
Now this is where you want to start isolating your 'x'. Subtract both sides by 100.
2) 100 - 100 + 4x = 180 - 100 ? 4x = 80
Now the final step of isolating the 'x'. Divide each side by 4.
3) 4/4x = 80/4 ? x = 20
