I have been teaching high school mathematics now for over 20 years. I won the Milken Teacher's Award for Illinois in 2005. I love math, solving word problems, and playing math logic games. I can't resist a student who wants to learn. I always tell my students to show their work because it allows me to see how their mind is attacking the problem so that I can guide them down the pathway that works for them not just the pathway that works for me. In math, there usually is more than one way to solve a problem. I never try to make any student feel inadequate simply because they did not understand the lesson the first time around or the fifth time around. I try to give them little successes to build up their self-confidence so they can persevere through the difficult stuff. If it is something new or a different approach to a problem, then usually at first introduction it will seem like voodoo to many people. However, if we take that voodoo topic and break it down into manageable pieces instead of trying to process the entire thing at one go, then usually by the third or fourth go, you have become an expert on it and it went from being hard and impossible to being doable. That is one of my goals - To make math accessible to all and give everyone a chance to succeed in mathematics. I am very patient and don't mind having to present in several different ways to find out what works for you or your student. If I can see the notes your teacher or textbook gave you, I can usually determine how they are approaching the topic and break it down for you in ways that make sense to you. I have taught high school math from Pre-Algebra thru AP Calculus and AP Statistics for over 20 years. I have worked with both regular students, advanced students and diverse learners.
