We need to leave x by itself. Since the -1/2 is attached to the x, we will first get rid of the -7 (to do this, we will have to do the opposite of -7 to both side of the equal sign). The opposite of -7 is +7, so we have the following... -1/2x - 7 + 7 = -11 + 7 -> Since -7+7= 0 and -11+7= - 4 we know have -> -1/2x = -4. Now we just have to get rid of the -1/2. Since x is divided by -2, we will do the opposite and multiply by -2 -> -2*(-1/2)x = -4 * -2 -> x = 8.

Add 7 to both sides: -1/2x = -4. Divide both sides by -1/2 (the negatives cancel) x = 8.
