A mixed number is a fraction with a whole number and a fraction: so 8 4/8 is a mixed number.
Let's start with 8 4/8. This is 8 and a half. We know 4 and 4 is 8....which is close to 8 4/8, but it says the two numbers need to be 2 2/8 apart (difference). How about 5 and 3..... they equal 8 and have a difference of two, so the answer is going to be close to them.
We've gotten to 8, but what about the 4/8 part? Well, 3/8 + 1/8 is 4/8. And they have a difference of 2/8. 3/8-1/8=2/8.
So what about 5 3/8 and 3 1/8. They add up to 8 4/8 and the difference is 2 2/8.
Break the numbers down and start with what you know.

Depending on your level of math, this is most easily solved with substitution.
Call the two numbers x and y.
So x + y = 8 4/8, which means x = 8 4/8 - y.
Also x-y = 2 2/8, but we know what x is in terms of y from above. So (8 4/8-y) - y = 2 2/8. Solving for y, we get y = 3 1/8. Now we go back and find x from x = 8 4/8 - (3 1/8) = 5 3/8.
So x = 5 3/8 ; y = 3 1/8.
